Benefits and the Business Case

How GreenVee brings earnings, economic benefit, and costs together into one profit picture for a project, program, or portfolio.

Budgets and Cost Items answer “what will we spend.” The Business Case view answers the bigger question: “is this worth it?” It pulls together everything money-related about a project — the Order’s revenue, the project’s economic benefit, and its costs — into one profit picture.

  • The Benefits page in the main navigation opens the Business Case for a project.
  • On a project, it’s the Business Case tab next to Budget Plan on the project’s Finance page.
  • Programs and Portfolios each have their own Business Case tab too — it rolls the same numbers up across every project underneath them.
KPI Where it comes from
Earnings The sum of Earning Occurrences recorded against the project’s Order. Zero if the project has no Order.
Economic Benefit The project’s single Benefit value (see Occurrences — this replaces the year-by-year Benefit Occurrence that GreenVee’s data model reserves but doesn’t yet use).
Costs The sum of Cost Occurrences across the project’s Cost Items, split into confirmed (Actual) and planned (Expected).
Profit Earnings + Benefit − Costs. GreenVee shows both a current figure (using confirmed earnings and actual costs) and an expected figure (using the full Order Volume, the Benefit, and all expected costs), along with a rough ROI percentage.

If the project has an Order, its Earning Occurrences appear in a list below the KPIs — each one is a payment received, with its description, amount, and date. The gap between the Order’s Order Volume and the total Earnings received is shown as Awaiting. See Orders for how the Order itself is set up.

If the project has no Order, the Earnings KPI stays at zero and the earnings list is empty — costs and economic benefit are still tracked and shown.

A Program’s Business Case adds together the Earnings, Costs, and Benefit of every Project directly under it. A Portfolio’s Business Case goes one level further: it adds together its own direct Projects and every Project under each of its Programs. Neither view stores its own separate benefit or earnings figures — everything is computed live from the underlying projects, the same way Portfolio and Program budgets roll up Cost Items (see Budgets and Cost Items).
